Cantor Teron Shalom Cohen received investiture, holds a Master Degree in Sacred Music and diploma of Hazzan from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2005. He also completed a Bachelor Degree in Music from the University of Redlands in 1999. He currently serves Congregation Har El in West Vancouver, British Columbia. Prior to his engagement with Congregation Har El he served the Jüdische Gemeinde zu Berlin, Germany and was also visiting Professor at the Abraham Geiger College Rabbinical School in Berlin, Germany. His influences of contemporary music, traditional hazzanut, Yemenite background and love for improvisation make him unique and exciting in his religious and musical presentations. He has been a longtime student of Cantor Noah Schall the world’s foremost teacher of hazzanut.
He is the recipient of many awards including: Richard H. Briskin Cantor-in-Residence Award, Broome and Allen Scholarship, Sephardic Scholarship, Leon Prize and Music Merit Scholarship. Cantor Cohen has also performed in various concerts in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area. In addition, he has performed with the Jerusalem Academy of Music & Dance Chamber Vocal Ensemble, Sutton Place Synagogue Choir, Park Avenue Synagogue Choir and the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem Choir. Cohen is an avid surfer and Iyengar yoga practitioner and prior to his arrival to Vancouver completed a two-month surf safari in Indonesia.
