Choir Practice

7:00 pm
iCal
Parsha Beshallach is interspersed with song, which makes this Shabbat an occasion long-known for its musicality and great Ruach (Spirit)!
What better way to prepare for our post-redemptive musical celebration than to join the Har El Choir? Cantor Teron Shalom Cohen has an exciting program that, with your participation, will bring beauty and expression to the Shabbat Shirah morning service this coming February. As with the High Holy Days choir sessions, this is also a great opportunity to learn together. There are 8 rehearsal dates, with practice beginning at 7pm on the following Thursdays:
December 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd
January 12th, 19th and 26th
…and February 2nd.
For more info, or to sign up, contact the Cantor at: cantor@harel.org or 604−925−6488 (ext. 3)

CANCELLED: Tu B’Shevat Mystical Seder
iCal
Rabbi Birnham’s mother is ill and he’ll be in North Carolina this week to help her. The Tu B’Shevat Seder has been cancelled. The Rabbi will be sending a reading to the congregation by email this week to help you observe the day on your own. In the meantime, feel free to browse the internet to learn more about Tu B’Shevat! The 15th of the month of Shevat was already a New Year for Trees in the 2nd Century C.E. You can find it described in Mishna Rosh Hashana. However, it was the mystics in the 16th century who turned it into an intensely spiritual holy day and created a “Mystical Seder” to help observe the day.

Arts & Education Meet the Author Night: with South African Israeli Author Pamela Peled

7:30 pm
iCal
Arts & Education Committee: Meet the Author Night
featuring Pamela Peled and her book “For the Love of God and Virgins”
For the Love of God and Virgins is a story about the love affair between David Saunders, the Israel correspondent for a British television station and South African born Jennifer Moran (who, like Peled, loves Shakespeare). Widowed at a young age when her husband was murdered in a terrorist attack, Jennifer brings up her daughter in a leafy suburb of Jerusalem, and teaches High School kids the finer points of English grammar. But when the second Intifada breaks out she is roused from her routine to accost a handsome reporter who manipulates the news; before she knows it she is plunged into a world of political intrigue and danger, where the reporter himself becomes the news. As the action moves between Jerusalem and London, the reader is caught up in Jennifer’s yearning for peace, both in her country and at home.
Pamela Peled grew up in Johannesburg and has lived in Israel for almost 40 years, spending many years in Jerusalem.
Books will be available for sale and refreshments will be served. Please RSVP with the office.

Sisterhood present An Evening of Short Films

7:00 pm
iCal
This special evening will feature three short films, including a film by Marcy Gailiunas’ son Paul’s film, “The Florenstine Collection.” This is a short 30 minute film that won 1st Place at the 2011 Doxa Film Festival, which took place in Vancouver this past spring.
The story begins with Helen Hill finding a large pile of dresses, all hand sewn and with fabric of the 30’s and 40’s. Helen was an Artist and Film Maker as well as teacher at the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design. She and Paul lived in New Orleans at that time.
Who did these dresses belong to? Why were they discarded? These questions induced Helen to begin a hunt for the dressmaker and her story.
The film has a fanciful and emotional storyline, and has become a tribute to Florenstine (the dressmaker) , and to Helen’s spirit.
The script, music and narration was written by Paul, and the film completed in 2010. It has been shown across several cities in Canada and the USA this past year.
Read more about the film here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1801547/
The other films shown this evening will be announced shortly.
Refreshments will be served.

Purim: A Presentation about The Book of Esther with Sheila Silverman (NSHS)

7:30 pm
iCal
Purim, or the Feast of Lots, is a joyous holiday. The story is one of the most beloved in the Jewish community. It includes a courageous heroine, a sinister villain, and a plot for the destruction of the Jews described in a series of incidental yet intriguing events. Destiny or circumstance? That is the question. Who is pulling the strings? The story that never mentions God’s name provokes theological, historical, and even feminist examination.
We invite you to join Sheila Silverman for an intriguing look into the messages behind the lines. Hamentaschen and graggers for all.
