Matriarch Sarah – Who Was She?
Our matriarch Sarah is one of the most fascinating women in the Torah. What is most intriguing is her relationships and how the Torah shows us the multifaceted aspects of her strong personality. God was certainly intrigued by her, as we will be when we examine her story. Please RSVP with Tracy in the office: (604) 925‑6488.

Stan Greenspoon: It’s NO Longer Science Fiction: The Search for Extrasolar Planets and Extraterrestrial Life”

7:30 pm
iCal
Beginning with the achievements of Copernicus and Galileo in the 16th and 17thcenturies, the Earth lost its privileged status in the Universe. Subsequently, the Sun was found to be a rather ordinary star among the estimated 200 to 400 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy, which itself is now known to be one of at least one hundred billion galaxies in the Universe. While it has long been assumed that there must be planets in orbit around other stars, it was not until 1995 that an extrasolar planet was found, the first of over 3000 potential planets discovered since then, of which more than 700 have been confirmed. On the other hand, the existence of life elsewhere in the Universe has not been generally assumed, but is rather an open question. Stan will consider the astronomical and physical issues involved in the discovery of extrasolar planets, examine the criteria for the existence of life on them, and throw open for discussion the effects the discovery of extraterrestrial life, intelligent or otherwise, could have on humans’ views of their place in the Universe and on their religious beliefs. Please RSVP with the office.
Stan Greenspoon graduated from McGill University before earning his PhD in Physics from the University of Waterloo. Prior to coming to Capilano University in 1988, where he is now chair of the Pure & Applied Sciences Division, Stan taught at a number of colleges and universities across Canada. He is also chair of the B.C. Physics & Astronomy Articulation Committee, which facilitates student mobility among provincial colleges and universities. When Stan was in his 20’s, he served as a science affairs officer on the Secretariat of the United Nations in New York City. Stan enjoys sharing his knowledge of, and enthusiasm for Physics and Astronomy with people of all ages, from children at Capilano University’s astronomy summer camp to seniors at the university’s Eldercollege.
